Just the one anthem b/c it's Palm Sunday Vigil Mass:
When Jesus Wept
by William Billings
-setting by Doug E. Wagner, available through
Beckenhorst Press, #BP1106-2
When Jesus wept, the falling tear,
In mercy flow'd beyond all bound.
When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear
Seized all the guilty world around, around.
O come, and mourn with me awhile,
And linger here beside (with me here beside);
O come together let us mourn:
O Jesus our Lord, is crucified.
Repeat 1st verse
Our Lord is crucified.
For the past three years, we have had the privilege to sing this Mass. As always, we welcome the parish Cantor, Brent Corbello, who will be our psalmist and song leader. The guys sure do look up to you, Brent, and we are blessed by the rumble your beautiful Bass voice makes when you sing with the choir. Thank you for all you do for St. Richard's, but especially for helping us with this magnificent Mass.

Our Choir Spring Break Three-for-ALL!
Well, this weekend was a big one for the SRYC. We did three different things: Mass on Saturday at 5:30 PM that featured a long-practiced duet, and our 1st Gelineau Psalm; an overnight lock-in in the Youth Center; and then 8:00 AM Mass. (Add to that 10:30 AM Mass and Vulpius' Jesus Said to the Blind Man and at least two of us were completely exhaustedly happy).
So here's how it all went down:
1. Mass at 5:30 PM
Here's a bit of rehearsal video---our very own Fouder_One Kaitlyn and Claire putting the final touches on "By the Waters of Babylon" by Mawby. The video starts out with me carrying the amera, but I setlle in stable and not wiggly in about 15 seconds:
***AND YET AGAIN THE BLOGGER UPLOADER FAILED***
So, you'll have to check it out on You Tube--CLICK HERE
After serious work for Mass, we had an opportunity to run through some of our Broadway numbers for the Draw Down!!!! It was super fun, but I didn't video tape it because you have to BUY a ticket to see us in all our Broadway FUN!
2. LOCK-IN
After Mass ), we went to the YOUTH CENTER to play games, eat obscene amounts of pizza, and have loads of crazy fun. Thank you to Ms. Amelia for getting the whole place ready for us so nicely. *thanks*! While we were there, we did our first read of our original script---"BACKSTAGE AT BROADWAY: A MURDER IN THE DARK"
Questions swirl around the room....

a mystery indeed...
Who killed Diva Maria du Jour?
Is Diva Minerva da Wannabe NEXT?
Will Dewitt Mighway finally get everyone to do it her way?
Is Alphonso Madoff mit da Moula behind the whole thing??????
You'll have to wait to find out until May 15th when the whole cast finally has it ready for y'all. Until then....murder is in the air....
3. Mass Sunday, Mar 15th
On Sunday morning, at 6:00 AM, I woke them up to hot biscuits and coffee. Bleary-eyed, stumbling, and remarkably cheerful, they hurry-flurried through getting ready and eating and were ready to rehearse at 7:15. Go SRYC! We sang, and it was WONDERFUL, but the most memorable part of Mass was Fr. Mike in his $1.00 sunglasses talking about blindness and dark and coming into the LIGHT. The extra song in the drop box is very special to us, and I am sorry I cannot put the lyrics up, but it is not published yet and we have permission to sing it from the composer. It has become part of our heart. When it's published, we'll sing it again and I'll type the texts & translation for you.

We Sing THIS Weekend: Anthem Texts
Lord Thou Hast Searched Me
By R. Roth, available from Paraclete Press
Lord, Thou hast searched me and dost know
where e're I rest, where e're I go.
Thou knowest all that I have planned
and all my ways are in thy hand.
Where can I go apart from thee,
and whither from thy presence flee.
In heav'n it is thy dwelling fair
in death's abode, Lord, thou art there.
If deepest darkness cover me,
the darkness hideth not from thee.
To thee both night and day are bright
the darkness shineth as the Light.
By the Waters of Babylon
by Colin Mawby, available through GIA publications
By the waters of Babylon,
we sat down and wept,
we sat down and wept,
when we remembered thee, O Zion,
when we remembered thee, O Zion.
As for our harps, we hanged them up,
upon the trees that were therein.
For they that led us away captive,
required of us then a song,
and melody in our heaviness,
"Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
"Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
"Sing us! Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
How can we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?
By the waters of Babylon
we sat down and wept.
We sat down and wept.
When we remembered thee, O Zion
when we remembered thee, O Zion.

An explanation of sorts---when I planned the liturgies for this year, I excitedly focused on this Mass, this Day, THESE readings, so delighted to schedule psalm 137 beside this amazing piece by Mawby. So, I recruited my best two singers, an alto and soprano, and they worked and worked and worked for 8 months to get it as perfect as possible so it would hang in the air alongside this great psalm and fill the heart with a sense of exile and regret and poignant joy...
However...as anyone who is following along knows...those are the B year readings.
In February, I was shocked to find out we do not DO the B readings at St. Richard's during Lent, choosing instead to use the A readings every year. Sadly, our Music Director did not remember this until February, and she had to alter all of her planning, too. Her choir is made up of adults, though, and sings every week. My choir sings only once per month.
I approached Fr. Mike about letting the girls sing the duet anyway. He was so kind and so good about it, so the incongruity this Saturday is real. But, blindness and exile have similar themes, and I hope that the beautiful longing for God in this one rare exception to the rubric will be embraced by our beloved Saturday afternoon congregation.
Sunday, we switch gears and will sing liturgically focused Lent IV A reading music.
See you at Mass!

A Funny Thing Happened
When I put Fr. Mike's sermon in the drop box with the choir music from Ash Wednesday. A whole bunch of people went and listened. Way more people than I've ever seen around the blog before...So, I am wondering if perhaps St. Richard's community and extended family might find it beneficial to have recordings of sermons/daily meditations on the lessons accessible over the computer? If you have opinions either way, please feel free to post a comment. (All comments are moderated), because it was curious and wonderful all at the same time.
